What if I told you the words “faith,” “salvation” and “eternity” had different meanings in the first century? Would you be curious to hear more if I told you there are numerous other words which have also changed in both meaning and application due to limitations in the English language, transformations in social norms and other issues? If so, then please join the book club for its next series of discussions, which will be based on celebrated scholar and theologian Marcus Borg’s book “Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power, And How They Can Be Restored.”
Members of our group are now in the process of ordering copies of “Speaking Christian” and will bring them to next meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2015, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. This meeting will open with a final discussion of our current book (The Origin of Satan) and will close after we’ve developed our reading schedule for “Speaking Christian”. All who are interested in reading “Speaking Christian” with us are encouraged to attend the book club meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 14.
The book club meets biweekly on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m., at Universalist National Memorial Church. (The meeting location is accessible from the U Street and Dupont Circle Metro Stations, as well as the S2/S4/S9 bus routes.) Past participants in the club have included Crystal Lewis, friends and members of UNMC, members of other churches and community residents. You’re welcome to stop by and listen in on the discussions, even if you choose not to read the books. Hope to see you at our next meeting!
